How to Use the IBAN Validator
Enter your IBAN number in the field above and click "Validate IBAN". The tool will instantly check whether your IBAN is correctly formatted for its country, verify the MOD-97 check digit, and identify the issuing bank where possible.
You can enter the IBAN with or without spaces — our tool removes spaces automatically. Letters are converted to uppercase as you type.
What Does IBAN Validation Check?
Our IBAN validator performs three levels of checking:
- Country code validation: The first two characters must be a valid ISO 3166-1 country code that participates in the IBAN system.
- Format and length validation: Each country has a fixed IBAN length and specific character pattern. We verify your IBAN matches the expected format for its country.
- MOD-97 check digit verification: The two check digits after the country code are mathematically linked to the rest of the IBAN using the MOD-97 algorithm. This catches the vast majority of transcription errors.
What Can Cause an IBAN to Be Invalid?
Common reasons an IBAN fails validation include: incorrect country code, wrong total length, transposed digits, incorrect check digits, letters where numbers should appear (or vice versa), and copying errors from handwritten sources.
Always double-check an IBAN before making a payment. If you receive an IBAN that fails validation, contact the sender to verify the details before proceeding.
